In my time thinking about the game plan, so far, I have been successful in finding information and resources necessary for my game plan. I am continuing to look forward to my professional development days in the middle of June.
My action plan has not been modified yet, as I am wrapping up the school year and have not yet fully implemented my plans.
So far, I have learned that computer based lessons need to be planned far enough in advance to prepare for error with computers or power outages etc. Technology is very helpful and a wonderful resource, however it is important to remember that there can be glitches and time needs to be accounted for. As I finish up a lab with students investigating how pulse is affected by different activities, I am realizing, even more, how important authentic assessment truly is. “We need to remember that one of the primary reasons we use authentic learning is to promote students’ deep understanding of subject- matter content through the process of doing” (Cennamo, Ross, & Ertmer, p. 169, 2009).
A question that has arisen is, what is; the best way for me to be prepared for the two upcoming professional development days? My thought is to prepare by doing research on the presenters and access power point or mimio presentations for the professional development days, this way I can see in advance what we are going to be learning about. I will therefore be mentally prepared. I will also be able to prepare a word document for efficient note taking during the presentations.

Christine,
ReplyDeleteBy including technology into your everyday activities you are encrouaging students to become familiar with resources in the real world. Through the use of technology students are encouraged to show what they know, be creative, and extend their learning.
Before heading to your professional development days can I recommend that you go and observe the Mimio being put to use in a classroom. Seeing it in use in a classroom and seeing it being used in a seminar are two totally different things.
I attended a seminar on the Mimio this past year. I was very excited to learn all about this cool, wireless, and portable interactive board. That excitment quickly disappeared when the seminar turned into more of a sales pitch and less of an introduction and how to event.

ReplyDeleteMs. Griswold,
May I suggest that to prepare for your seminar this summer you first take some time for yourself to breathe and reflect on the closing of another school year? I find it strange that in the end of the year shuffle, we sometimes forget and are not asked to reflect on our year’s failures and successes. In my district we are asked to reflect on our Results Based Evaluation System (RBES, more affectionately known as Rabies because it drives everyone crazy) how this reflection is simply data driven, and doesn't take into account the feel of the year. Take the time to personally and truthfully evaluate yourself so you can truly learn from this year and then put it behind you. Going to your seminar with a rested, relaxed mind will help to stimulate new and exciting ideas. From personal experience, I find that I get much more amped up about an idea when I'm not suffocated with a plethora of other demands on my time.
Christine,
ReplyDeleteI agree that preparation is key for success with a technology lesson. Identifying possible problems will reduce your stress level while increasing student learning quality. Even when only one student has a problem, fixing the computer glitch can be distracting to others around them.
In terms of professional development, I like your proactive approach to the topics you will be learning. Another preparation besides research that you might consider is coming up with a list of three or four questions you would like answered by the presentations. This will help you keep a focus throughout the day. Furthermore, you will be able to standout as an involved participant if you ask these questions. Sometimes I feel like I should be a part of an interactive group but do not know how to jump in. Premade questions can be perfect for this situation.
